In 2009, Wesleyan College embarked upon a two-year, collaborative, continuing education initiative for Bibb County teachers entitled, EXCEL (Evoking eXcellence in Content Enriched Leaders). Funded through the Georgia Department of Education Math and Science Partnership (MSP) grant, this initiative is designed to substantively improve the content knowledge of K-12 teachers. The partners in the MSP grant are the Bibb County Board of Education, Wesleyan College, Macon State College and Macon's Museum of Arts and Sciences.
For two weeks in the summer and on select Saturdays during the school year, Wesleyan hosts two cohorts of educators, one comprised of 3rd grade teachers and the other composed of 7th grade teachers. Professional learning and deepened content knowledge are facilitated by Wesleyan Biology, Chemistry and Math faculty members who design and implement hands-on, interactive experiments and activities that match GA DOE curriculum standards. Participation in this collaborative is a tangible example of Wesleyan’s commitment to “..work in service to the larger community that surrounds us” and to support the vital role that K-12 educators play in the lives of our children.
