Wesleyan allows faculty, staff and students to create and maintain their own webpages on Wesleyan's web server. These pages are not part of the official Wesleyan Website, and so are not governed by the same style rules of the official site, but, as they are being housed on a Wesleyan webserver, they must abide by all Wesleyan policies concerning electronic communications and media.
Webspace should be automatically created for each faculty member when they join Wesleyan, but staff and students must request space. If you are a faculty member and discover that you have not been given your webspace, or you are a staff member or student and need to request webspace, please contact the CIR office by creating a Help Desk ticket.
To create a webpage or website (a collection of webpages) really is not that difficult. The first thing you need is the webspace and Wesleyan provides that.
The second thing you need is a software program capable of creating webpages. Wesleyan provides that too for faculty and staff in the form of Microsoft Frontpage. If you find that you do not have Frontpage, please contact the CIR office by creating a Help Desk ticket.
If you are not able to get Frontpage or would prefer to use some other program, you do have options. Your first option is NotePad. It is a part of your Windows package. NotePad is a no frills text editor that can be used for writing simple notes to creating web pages. If you are comfortable writing the HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) code for web pages, NotePad can work for you.
Not everyone is comfortable writing webpage code. Some people prefer to create their webpages using a program with a WYSIWYG interface, which stands for "What You See Is What You Get" and is pronounced "Whizzie Wig". Working with a WYSIWYG allows you to see the page very much as it will appear in a web browser as you create it. Most web page creation programs, such as Frontpage have a WYSIWYG as well as a screen that displays the raw web page code.
If you cannot get Frontpage or do not want Frontpage and do not want to use NotePad, do not worry. There are free- yes, free! HTML Editors and WYSIWYG programs available. In our list of resources to the left, items listed as HTML Editors do not have a WYSIWYG interface.
Some programs have several features, for example, Mozilla is a web browser bundled with Composer - a webpage creation tool which you may have seen attached to older versions of Netscape.

HTML Editors: Windows
HTML Editors: Linux and Mac
WYSIWYG: Cross Platform
