Liberty: Compositions by Wesleyan's First Alumnae : From box 1, 1845 - 1880

Thank you so much for visiting Wesleyan College's first virtual exhibit! We hope that this exhibit will be both informative and interesting!

Scope and Content Note:

The Wesleyan College Junior/Senior Compositions Collection, Box 1, consists of 37 compositions written by Wesleyan alumnae during their Junior and/or Senior years at the college. The collection has been archived at Willet Memorial Library, at Wesleyan College, in Macon, Georgia. The collection consists of handwritten papers, often held together by small pieces of ribbon. It is organized by date.

The collection begins in 1856 and continues through 1880. The compositions have been numbered from 1 through 37, with the earliest being numbered number one. This arrangement reflects the development of thought of several alumnae as they processed through their Junior to Senior years, and gives a chronologically accurate and contemporary insight into the current events of the time.

Most documents deal with political themes or reflections on literature, but there is a wide variety of topics covered. Some documents are Valedictory speeches, while others are final papers written upon the completion of the Junior or Senior year.

Almost all documents survive in their original handwritten form, with a few being copies of originals. Nearly all are also handwritten, with the exception of a few copies that were typed by the copier on a typewriter. Because of the age of the documents, ink has faded or disappeared in certain places, making for small gaps in the database transcription.

The documents have been transcribed by archives interns as noted on the transcriptions, and digitized by Jessica Layne. The compositions have been saved into a database at Wesleyan College. The database is accessible by the general public through the virtual exhibit, reached through the Willet Memorial Library webpage.
