BIO270 Laboratory Guide #8

BODY CAVITY; DIGESTIVE AND

RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS

After completing this laboratory you should be able to:

1)   Describe the developmental of the coelom in vertebrates;

2)   Describe how each of the subdivisiona of the body cavities forms and what the relationship of each is to the viscera;

3)   Identify each of the specific digestive structures listed below and briefly describe its physiological function;

4)   Identify each of the specific respiratory structures listed below and briefly describe its physiological function.

I.  BODY CAVITIES

1)   Work through Z&K exercise #7, involving opening the body cavities of the shark, mudpuppy and cat.  Pay special attention to the relationships between body cavities and the defining membranes.

2)   Review your text to be sure that you understand the basic developmental pattern of body cavities, especially the embryological origin of the coelom and how parietal and visceral layers, mesentaries, suspsensory membranes, and omenta form.

II.  DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

1)   Work through Z&K exercise #7, involving exposing and identifying external and internal structure of digestive organs.

2)   Be able to identify structures on the organ list below for this lab.

3)   Be able to relate gross and microscopic anatomy of each organ to function.  Be able to desribe anatomical and functional organ specializations for the shark, mudpuppy and cat.
